Types of vegetarian diets and diet

As we discussed in the previous article in which we echoed some of the fundamental characteristics of the diet and vegetarian diet , this type of food can become a truly healthy alternative, as long as they ensure the consumption of all the nutrients necessary for the organism.

This is because a vegetarian diet as it is conceived, does not ensure the consumption of certain key nutrients, such as proteins, vitamins and minerals, being able to suffer from osteoporosis, anemia and growth retardation in children.

And because, in addition, it is not advisable to carry out a strict vegetarian diet during different biological moments such as childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, lactation and old age.

However, within your own vegetarian food itself, we must indicate that there are different types of vegetarian diets , so it is necessary to know which are to choose the follow-up or the adoption of some or others.

Types and types of food and vegetarian diets

  • Semivegetarian diet: It is a diet that includes dairy, chicken, egg and fish, as well as plant foods. With this type of diet, there are no risks of nutritional deficiencies.
  • Pescovegetarian diet: It mainly includes plant foods, dairy products, fish and eggs. Iron deficiency of animal origin can occur, with anemia appearing if fish consumption is low.
  • Strict vegetarian diet: It is a type of diet or extremely strict diet, since it is based solely and exclusively on foods of vegetable origin, and does not include dairy products, eggs or any type of meat. With this diet there are many nutritional deficiencies, with risk of suffering from anemia, osteoporosis or growth retardation in children.
  • Lacto-vegetarian diet: It includes only vegetable and dairy foods, so that nutritional deficiencies can appear due to the lack of animal iron and vitamin B12. Therefore, the risk is the appearance of anemia.
  • Ovovegetarian diet: It only includes vegetable foods and eggs, being able to produce nutritional deficiencies of vitamin B12, animal iron and calcium, and being able to appear osteoporosis and anemia.
  • Lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet: It is characterized because it includes egg, vegetable and dairy foods, although nutritional deficiencies of vitamin B12 and animal iron can also occur, with the possible appearance of anemia.
