Sesame allergy

sesame allergy The Sesame seeds , also known by the name of sesame , become a characteristic food of some countries as for example is the case of Morocco, where they are widely used to make the delicious Moroccan sweets, although it is also common to use it for bread.

The seeds come from a herbaceous plant that belongs to the family of Pedaliaceae , originally from India and Africa, although today we can find it in many other places.

From a nutritional point of view, sesame seeds stand out for their high content of fatty acids, which help reduce high cholesterol levels. In addition, they help to purify the organism naturally and are especially rich in minerals, among which we can highlight the presence of zinc, calcium and iron.

Although it is a healthy food, did you know that some people suffer from sesame allergy ? It is a food allergy more common than you think, and that appears not only by the consumption of sesame seeds, but by using products with sesame, such as certain cosmetics or pharmacy products.

Symptoms of sesame allergy

Like any food allergy, the sesame allergy causes a certain set of symptoms. The most common are the following:

  • Contact dermatitis (when in contact with cosmetics or pharmacy products with sesame).
  • Urticaria.
  • Allergic rhinitis.
  • Asthma.
  • Atopic dermatitis.
  • In severe cases anaphylaxis.

How to avoid the allergy to sesame?

Allergy itself can not be avoided or prevented, but you can avoid its symptoms, and that it ultimately appears.

Obviously the key is not to eat foods that contain sesame (such as cookies, breads, certain sweets ...), and pay attention to the cosmetics or products that we apply on the skin, since they may contain extract or sesame oil.

It is possible that the person with sesame allergy also has peanuts, since the biochemical structure of sesame allergens are similar to those of this nut.
